Early Years
Pool Hayes Primary has a small but warm and friendly Early Years department with safe large outside learning area. Within the setting is a Nursery class and a Reception class. Children take part in adult-led activities and child-initiated learning opportunities. We provide a calm, nurturing environment where well-trained staff develop positive and supportive relationships with both children and parents.
Our provision both indoors and outdoors, is regularly reviewed to ensure we are providing the best possible opportunities for our children. This positive start to school life gives children the potential to make excellent progress as they move through primary school. The dedicated staff are always determined to provide rich learning experiences, guaranteeing that every child is treated as an individual as they develop and mature into confident, independent learners. This ensures that ‘young minds grow’ to their full potential.
Curriculum
Children in nursery and reception learn by playing and exploring, being active and through critical thinking. This takes place both indoors and outdoors. During structured play the teacher/teaching assistant supports your child to apply the new learning they have completed during carpet sessions. This supports their understanding of the various skills.

Writing
Children learn to develop their pencil control through dough disco, squiggle while you wiggle and handwriting sessions. This enables them to write their letters and sounds and see writing as a fun and exciting activity. An example of dough disco can be found HERE. We further promote the development of these skills through Drawing Club that focuses on purposeful mark making and children using words and phrases.
Mathematics
Children learn maths through daily maths sessions, both full class and in small groups. Basic maths skills such as counting, number recognition, numicon recognition and naming and describing 2D shapes are taught. This builds children’s knowledge and confidence. Children are keen to practise these skills in daily independent activities, for example in Roleplay.
In Reception the children then move on to the DfE and NCTEM recommended maths programme, Power Maths alongside the Mastering Number National approach to improving maths in EYFS and KS1. An example of this approach can be found here.
Share & Collaborate
Children learn to read and write through the Read Write Inc. phonics programme. Rhymes and pictures help children to remember each of the sounds. Children are supported to practise writing these sounds, reading them and writing them within words. In Independent activities children are enthusiastic to practise these new skills in the Writing area and Reading corner.

We have places available for 3-4 year olds for September, offering high quality learning experiences in a well-equipped, safe and caring setting.
We offer a wonderful, nurturing and stimulating environment where your child/ren will be taught by highly experienced staff. Our Early Years team considers the holistic development of all children; where each child is immersed in a range of practical, first-hand learning experiences through which they are encouraged to explore, experiment, and develop their language as they make sense of the world around them.
We believe learning through play is vital; we use the environment to ensure the children’s needs are met through continuous provision, enhanced provision and following their interests.

Nursery Admissions – If you require a place for Nursery you can register your interest by emailing us at postbox@poolhayesprimary.co.uk
Parents can choose from the following options:
- Option 1
- Morning session 8:45am – 11:45am (3 hours per day, 5 days a week) 15 hours government funded.
- When places are offered in option 1 children are expected to attend 5 mornings a week.
- Option 2
- All day session 9:00am – 3:00pm – 30 hours government funded – 5 days per week for working families. (Parents/carers to provide a packed lunch for their child)
Reception Admissions – Limited places remaining. To apply for place, complete our online application. You can use the application portal every day from 8am to 9.30pm. The Walsall Gov application portal can be accessed HERE.
