SEND Information

In school, some children are identified as having Special Educational Needs or a Disability (commonly called SEND).

This means that for varying reasons a child may not be fully able to access the curriculum in the same way as other children and may need extra support, adaptations or different resources to help them during their learning.

The need for extra support, which is in place in school, is assessed and reviewed, as part of our Assess Plan Do Review (APDR) cycle throughout the school year.

The Local offer from Walsall Local Authority provides information about available help for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in Walsall. More information can be found HERE

Graduated Response/APDR Cycle

The SEND Code of Practice categorises SEND into four areas of need – children may have difficulties in one area, or may have a range of needs.

Cognition & Learning

Cognition and learning needs affect how children learn and think.

Cognition and Learning needs include: dyslexia, working memory issues, dyscalculia, ‘dyspraxia’ (developmental coordination disorder), dysgraphia

Communication & Interaction

Communication and interaction needs affect the way children communicate with others, their relationships and social skills.

Communication and interaction needs include: ASD, communication disorders, speech sound issues, DLD

Sensory and or Physical

Sensory and/or physical needs: sensory issues include hearing and visual impairments (or sometimes both), physical problems include physical disabilities, and motor skills difficulties.

Sensory or physical needs include: medical conditions, hearing or vision difficulties, physical handicap

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) covers a range of problems, including mental health difficulties, ADHD or social anxiety, confidence or self-esteem issues.

Not all children with special educational needs are disabled. At the same time, a child or young person may be disabled but will only have special educational needs if the disability impacts on his or her learning.

Where a child or young person has a disability and/or special educational needs, there are laws and guidance to help ensure that their needs are recognised and supported.

SEMH needs include: attachment disorder, ADHD, ADD, anxiety, trauma (ACES), bereavement
